Our eco-designed website

1.5 gCO2e

Average CO2e emissions per page view (EcoIndex*).

B

Average EcoIndex grade of our web pages (EcoIndex*).

73%

Our website's pages are 73% lighter comparing to the average weight of a web page (HTTP Archive, Feb. 2018 - May 2023).

Our website’s environmental impact was taken into account at all levels, from content & design to code. As an extension of our commitment to sustainability, our visual identity altogether took a more eco-friendly turn: minimalist graphic design, with particular attention to its carbon footprint.

Our approach

UI – Design

>

We used colours that save power. Since white is the most power-consuming colour, we used grey on our page’s backgrounds instead. We also reduced server requests by using only one font (Montserrat) and limiting image use.

UX – User experience

>

We made significant trade-offs to prioritise user needs and comfort by only keeping the essentials. For example, we added animations only when it was useful for navigation and access to information. We also reduced page depth by loading specific content (videos, old articles etc.) only when users click on them and by setting up an intuitive navigation between pages.

Code

>

We used a clean and minimalist code that requires minimal effort on devices and network. To reduce exchanges between users and servers, we limited the number of stylesheets and scripts for the layout of HTML elements.

Content

>

We reduced the number and size of the website’s images by carefully selecting meaningful pictures. The ones we ended up using were compressed as much as possible to reduce bandwidth and save power. We used monochromatic pictures with a noise filter on the main pages’ header pictures. This treatment allowed us to reduce the pictures’ weight by more than 50%.

Sustainable hosting

>

The website is hosted in a sustainable data centre, provided by DATACAMPUS in France. Its server is powered by renewable energy and has a liquid immersion cooling system that is more energy-efficient than air conditioning in traditional data centres.

Environmental impact assessment

>

We collaborated with Digital.Green to ensure our website meets all standard eco-design requirements. Our website’s environmental impacts were monitored with EcoIndex.

Accessibility

>

Colour and contrast accessibility have been tested to meet WCAG 2.0 Level AA conformance.
